As I’ve written about here at Fanbyte, his character took a significant shift when he stopped being a playable pillar. The series eventually stopped leaning into its character-driven stories and instead became about how fast Sonic could run around to stop Eggman’s latest scheme. The cast shifted from people with multifaceted arcs, like Shadow had from Sonic Adventure 2 to Sonic 06, to one-note characters easily summed up in the background of Sonic’s heroics. These were characters that, at one point, had relationships more complex than most mascot platformers could claim at the time. But now, as Sonic games push each of them further into the background, we can only make out the vague outline of who they once were.

The Blue hedgehog is not only one of the most popular and recognizable characters in gaming history but also the key part of a series of games that have constantly evolved over the decades. We jump to Sonic, Tales, Amy and Knuckles riding in their biplane when a weird pulse knocks the engines out, and they plummet towards Starfall Island. Instead of a crash landing, however, Sonic is dragged into a cyber world that has recreated one of the 2D platforms of his past. Beating the level gives you a score, rank and a list of challenges to complete. Once freed, Sonic is introduced to the first of five islands that make up the Starfall Islands. Sonic is now free to begin grinding rails, battling robots and mini-bosses while discovering heart-shaped gems.

Like many of Sonic’s 3D games, it has fun or interesting elements, but they don’t cohere into a satisfying whole. Sonic the Hedgehog’s stages are designed in an open-ended way and there are a lot of routes that you can take. There are a lot of goodies to find, too, like packs containing multiple rings and shields that can absorb the damage from one hit. I thoroughly enjoyed finding different routes and this aspect makes it unlike any other game I’ve played from the early ’90s. The only problem I had is that you can’t go very fast or you’ll end up getting hit and why is a Sonic game punishing you for going too fast anyway? That being said, most of the challenge comes from the platforming segments, during which I find myself wishing I was anyone other than Sonic.

  • He would be blue because that was the color of Sega’s corporate logo.
  • Whether anyone asked for a Sonic game with skill trees is irrelevant.
  • Gamers are always looking for a good deal, but Black Friday and Cyber Monday tend to have the deepest discounts of the year.

He intentionally blacked-out the entire body of Ohshima, who played no small part as the director and character designer. What followed was a justified barrage of angst from Twitter users who questioned Naka’s pettiness. In 1998, Naka and his team flew to Sega of America to get hands-on with a promising would-be launch title for the Sega Dreamcast, Geist Force. Unaware that anyone else in the room spoke Japanese, Naka right then and there began scheming of a way to gut the development team and instead implement their impressive 3D engine into the next Sonic game. Several vital employees resigned in response, and the game was canceled entirely.

All of this is to say that there’s a level of bland pandering (blandering?) that has manifested in various forms of Sonic games since 2010, and 2017’s Sonic games felt like a culmination of it. The games can still be fun, but direction never inspired confidence in me. To make matters more frustrating, with the rising length of game development, Sonic has been stuck in this limbo for some time. I want Sonic to feel like Sonic again, not an inoffensively appealing imitation of Sonic, and so I’m desperately looking towards Frontiers to shake things up. Sonic, Amy, and Tails have made their way to the Starfall Islands, where the Chaos Emeralds have mysteriously made their new home.

Though Sonic’s return to 3D isn’t without faults, the blue hedgehog’s back with a vengeance for a memorable experience

Act 3 has a glitch where you can sink into the ground near the top of the level, which glitches you ahead through a big chunk of the level. This is the case for the 8-bit version, as well as the later revisions and ports of the 16-bit game. Production has certainly slowed, so much so that gamers often joke that fans of Sonic are used to being let down. Perhaps surprisingly, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog films have filled the void. Back in the early ‘90s, a movie starring Sonic almost happened, but it was scrapped.

That’s right our Super-Speeded friend has now been released on a Nintendo console, which back in the day, was a pretty big deal. Unlike the 16-bit version Sonic cannot recollect rings after being damaged by an enemy Sonic. The “Sonic the Hedgehog Rock & Roll Band” concept was initially supposed to be kept for the game’s fully-featured sound test mode, where Sonic and crew would play their instruments along with the game’s soundtrack. This animation had to be removed in order to make room for the iconic “SEGA!” voice chime when the game first starts up, which Yuji Naka reportedly felt was a more impressive technological feat. Sonic was originally a light shade of blue, however testers had a difficult time telling Sonic apart from the blue sky.
